And before I forget - although Lori's well documented the contributions of the great folks at Roots Café in this post - after finally completing the part of the workshop I wasn't aware of when I signed up: eating the entire lunch menu at Roots in the course of a week. Friday's great breakfast and wonderful Med lunch were such a great way to end the week. We were so happy to find their great hummus today at Earth Fare in Raleigh! Thanks to Fletcher and Matt and Katie and all the gang at Roots for their gift of sustenance! I'm going to miss eating a great tasting breakfast or lunch out of one of Lori's beautiful ROOTS bowls!

How thankful I am for such an astonishing week. When Lori and I began talking about this adventure, I had some very specific goals in mind. 1. Explore yunomi. 2. Help me get more of a reduction look from my community studio's oxidation kiln firings. 3. Use a wheel again (the purchase of a slab-roller some months ago had transformed me into a slabber entirely). 4. Study glaze chemistry a bit - at least enough to know a little more about what element makes a glaze go a little more this or that way. 5. Make some progress in fresh ideas about surface decoration, and formulate a more mature sense of direction. Well, Lori's a master teacher, and gave careful consideration to each of these goals. We met them all, and surpassed my expectations in each area (who knew I would, at the end of the week, be browsing craig's list looking for a kickwheel). All that, coupled with tons of fun and gentle wisdom. Looking to grow your ceramic skills? Get Crazy Green! Thanks so much, Lori!

While we were filled with the normal combinations of anticipation and awe and fear that awaits the opening of a kiln, we were all still hungry after all that popcorn last night. So Roots became an informal gathering place (it wasn't in the plan for the day). Breakfast was sublime - the best biscuit I've ever had in my life - and I've been around biscuits for more than fifty years. Then the kiln opening, which Lori has documented with such good care. The colors we achieved don't really show with photographic equipment we've got - let's just say we were well pleased with our results in achieving some reduction looks in an oxidation kiln. So Roots became the site of a celebration lunch - the quesadilla and salsas and guac are wild and wonderful - the only cheesiness this great day enjoyed. (A little celebration chocolate at the Chocolate Lounge didn't hurt us a bit either - who doesn't love incredibly tasty antioxidants?)

What an amazing day of mentoring and care by so many fine artists, and while this blog focuses upon the great work Lori's done with her clay student, one can't forget how the good folks at Roots have fed us....Breakfast granola with fruit and yogurt and fine coffee...it's beauty (served in one of Lori's bowls) and taste can't be beat as a way to begin the day. And then the whole gang became carnivorous (we were very tofu inclined) with the desire for Roots great pork BBQ with cornbread and collards and 'tater salad! A cool glass of amazingly refreshing iced tea and we were ready for more road work!

Today we could breathe a bit more - without respirators, since all glazes and clays are mixed! But breathing (especially breathing out) seems to be of critical importance when trying to center a lot of clay to throw off the hump. We were once again sustained by the River Arts community: not only a great quick lunch from Roots Cafe (today a Gyro - chicken or portobello, which was simply fantastic) Odyssey was kind enough to open Kyo Yamamoto's great lecture and slideshow to feed our hearts, brains and souls. I'll never think of negative space in design quite the same way again.

I know what you mean about the never ending "To Do" list. I take a long walk every morning and it's then that I figure out what really has to get done before I can get out to the studio. Such as playing on the internet and reading Pottery Bloggers.. Now that's important stuff!
